Ferro-vanadium prices rose to $25 per kg on the bottom end, as market participants reported slightly larger deals at higher prices.

Cargoes of 10 tonnes and above were sold above $25 per kg, they said, and prices below this level are no longer being reported.

Producers have also begun negotiations for next year’s contracts and said the discount applied to long-term business is looking smaller.

“I would say the contract discount is going down. There’s also reasonable demand with additional quantities requested,” one producer said.

The availability of spot material has also diminished, with some producers saying they are now more or less sold out for 2013.

“It still seems things are rising. We’ve got nothing to sell anymore, and there are still plenty of customers out there [in the spot market],” a second producer said.

Metal Bulletin’s quotation moved up to $25-25.30 per kg in Europe on Wednesday, with suggestions that smaller quantities are now being sold at $25.50 and above.

“Everybody, at this point, is hoping for better prices. Customers are already asking for orders for February delivery,” a trader said.

Frame contract discounts are not likely to be more than 4% in Europe next year, he added, as lower spot prices seen in recent weeks are dictating producers’ strategies.

Now that availability appears to be tighter, however, spot prices have begun to come up, although it is still not clear how long this will last.
